Filling the airwaves with jangly guitar riffs reminiscent of The Byrds, and some Evan Dando style vocals, while the lyrical yinreflects loss, regret, and a yearning for the past, Haywood’s musical yang draws inspiration from the sounds of 60s Britpop.
— Great Dark Wonder
A rather beautiful highlight is ‘Slowly Disappear’, a ballad which nonetheless has a pressing rhythm and some lovely fluid lead guitar, with strings being used sparingly to add to the ambience and build within the structure. ‘Solitary Raven’, meanwhile, treads a similarly elegiac line, with a moody backing that has an almost spaghetti western feel to it. It is perhaps the most inward looking track present, where allegory rather than literal description is the order of the day, and is a fine way to close the record.
There is a complete lack of filler, with each song being entirely simpatico with the ones around it; as such, a really rounded listening experience. Any fans of the Beatles, or George Harrison particularly, as well as the Laurel Canyon scene, are likely to find plenty to enjoy here. 8/10
Jonathan Smith, Americana UK
The current Jason Haywood & The Goldrush incarnation seems to suit him well. The songs here manage the unlikely feat of sounding immediately familiar with all sorts of nods in the direction of other artists, while never once sounding derivative or forced. Very clever indeed and thoroughly recommended.
Paul Jackson, Fatea Records, UK
"The hallmark of this brilliantly written collection
of songs is the stories on which they are based.
This is the work of a great story-teller."
Phil Grant, Americana UK
Jason Haywood Bio
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Haywood celebrates the dawning of a new musical era with his new backing band, The Goldrush. The full-time return to the solo arena following his departure from outlaw country group The Divorcees in 2022 marks a creative rebirth for the renowned writer, whose
work is influenced by timeless legends including George Harrison, John Lennon, The Byrds, and Tom Petty to name a few. Yet at the heart of his work, Haywood’s voice is entirely his own.
His last studio effort, Folklore, won the singer-songwriter praise both at home and on the international stage, including high-profile coverage from Americana UK and Kurrent Music in the Netherlands. Additionally, Haywood was named Traditional/Roots Artist of the Year by Music New Brunswick in
2018. Folklore marked the culmination of more than three decades of countless miles travelled and hundreds of stages shared with the likes of Blackberry Smoke, Fred Eaglesmith, Hayes Carll and Corb Lund.
Haywood just finished the follow-up to Folklore, eponymously titled Jason Haywood & The Goldrush, released on September 20, 2024.
